Dear Maharaja,
Dear devotees, please accept our obeisances. All glories to Srila
Prabhupada.
Could you kindly instruct us in the following matter: what shall we do with
more and more calves, born by our cow every year. We have no opportunity to
keep many cows, for in our place there is no much grass. What to do? What
are other farmers do? What did Srila Prabhupada said on this issue? What is
an experience in this area?
Thank you very much in advance,
devotee-farmers of Kurjinovo (South Russia)

Stop breeding immediately before it is too late!
This breeding yearly has been proven disastrous in so many projects. Get
heritage breeds of cows, that continue to give some small amount of milk for
many years, and only breed a cow say twice in her lifetime.
Have you read the Cow Minimum Standards? Much of this is laid out there,
although not in detail of all the sad experiences that lead to them.

We are enclosing the the Minimum Cow Protection Standards which are ISKCON
Law 507 and the GBC Report Form in a separate e-mail. There is a section on
breeding in the Standards which explains breeding according to the carrying
capacity of the land. Please refer also to the glossary. The GBC Report
forms should be filled out quarterly by the GBC or a GBC appointed Monitor
who ideally is not connected to the cow protection program. A copy should be
sent to this Ministry, a copy saved for your files, and a copy for the GBC.
Over breeding (breeding numbers beyond the carrying capacity of the land)
has been at the foundation of cow abuse within ISKCON. When there are too
many cows, each cow can not be taken care of properly and neglect begins
which develops into cow abuse.
Most of the ISKCON Farms have either totally stopped breeding or minimized
breeding according to the carrying capacity of the land. We advise you
analyze the local carrying capacity of the land and make a plan as to how
many and how often you can breed.
In addition, the bull calves born will become a burden if they are not
engaged in ox power. What are your plans for them? We look forward to your
participation in this conference as there are devotees in this conference
who can help you with their experience.
Your servant,
Balabhadra das
Minister for Cow Protection and Agriculture
