I studied the commission E and it is a waste of money. Kings is night and day for less money. It is not even a comparison. I had a friend offer to buy the commission E if I wanted and after looking it over I declined. I would like to be part of a program where devotees could come and learn about devotee occupations such as the various healing arts, crafts etc. Please let me know as your inspiration grows.

Dvibhuja Prabhu--

Thanks for the nice list of books. Maybe I can pick up a couple this spring if the government still has its act together enough to send tax refunds. Another similar book which I am hoping to get is the German Commission E Monographs, which is a translation of scientific monographs on many different herbs, commissions by the German government. Like the books you describe, it appears to be a serious volume. I'm hoping I can understand it if I get it.

The fact that you are getting some response from your classes and are able to use them as a platform for introducing people to Krsna consciousness is inspiring, as I said before. I hope that you are somehow able to add other devotee experts and develop a broader range of offerings. That would expand preaching opportunities and act as an inspiration to the rest of us who are racking our brains as to how to start a varnasrama college.

your servant,

Hare Krsna dasi

Dear Mother Hare Krsna Prabh

PAMHO AGTSP

Thank you for your encouragement.

The book in the picture is just a weed identification book. There are a number of books that I use that a scholar such as yourself mind find very helpful as well as Mother Carol and any other serious self sufficient oriented personalities. That is if Mother Carol is still talking to me. I really like to hear her comments, but sometimes on email we are put to task for so many things because they are in print and so many people read them. Somebody is bound to be having a trying day and so thus any controversial remark is bound to be taken up. I pray I can possibly render her and your good self some service by listing the books which I have found very helpful even indispensable to really research the native herbs in ones environment.

Most of the books are reprints by Eclectic Medical Publications in Sandy Oregon. The phone # for the company sponsoring their reprinting is 1-800-798-9951. The lady you need to talk with is Kathy or used to be at least. Tell them Darrell Martin sent you, not that it really matters. The books are expensive, but they are real herb books. The main ones listed below were used by the physicians of the last century and I have found them to be gold mines. They are very credible and offer all information about even obscure plants which you will find very little info in other herb books. Yes even castor bean.

Kings American Dispensatory is the cream of the crop. It is a two volume set which is over 2000 pages of doctors uses of herbs, oils, etc. It was the desk reference of all Eclectic Physicians. No other work exists to even come close on American Medicinal Plants.

The next is called Ellingwoods American Meteria Medica Therapeutics and Pharmacogonosy. It is very useful because it provides disease reference. I have found valuable secrets that have made me look like a genius. It is less expensive and a one volume. I use it a lot.

The next is Cooks dispensatory. He deals a lot with fresh or dried herbs also. Such as teas. He is a different school of medicine but some tips are in his book not in the others, for those who are looking to find reference to that one plant it might be helpful although Kings and Ellingwoods just about do it.

I also find A book called Indian Herbology of North America by alma hutchens very useful for some plants. Of course there are many books, but these are the most important starting from Kings. It is a must. It will change your whole perspective on native plant research.

I hope this helps.

Just wanted to mention that there is a very nice article about Dvibhuja Prabhu in the current issue of Hare Krsna World, describing how he presents classes and workshops on herbology and uses them as a practical means of attracting people to Krsna consciousness. This is a very important part of Srila Prabhupada's intention in establishing varnasrama colleges.

Dvibuja Prabhu presents a very practical step in developing Prabhupada's varnasrama college, by simply developing the self-sufficient knowledge he has and using that as a platform to attract others to Krsna consciousness. It seems that if he could convince one or two other members of his community to offer courses in sawyering or blacksmithing or preserving foods, the beginning of a varnasrama college could be found.

Just wondering Prabhu -- what is the title of the book you are holding in the photograph? I'm always looking for a new herb book!

your servant,

Hare Krsna dasi
